HISTORY
From Bergazzi to Fitzrovia
The story begins in the small village of Bergazzi in the Appenine Hills of Northern Italy, the home of Lazzaro and Maria Bertorelli, whose four sons ventured to England in the early 1900s
David, one of those four sons, opened a caffè in Charlotte Street in the heart of fashionable Fitzrovia. His brothers Celeste, Ludovico and Giuseppe soon joined him and, with the most basic kitchen and just five tables they served traditional English food to cabbies and local chauffeurs.
Serving delicious Italian food since 1913
But customers became intrigued by the more exotic dishes the Bertorelli's cooked for themselves - authentic Italian food.
The restaurant expanded to 100 seats and was soon the talk of London. A second Bertorelli opened in Covent Garden, behind the popular Royal Opera House, to the delight of the glamorous crowds wearing formal evening attire and fabulous gowns.
Still fresh nearly a century later
Today the Bertorelli name can now be found in six beautiful locations in the city and West End of London. The menu is still based on the same principles of serving simple, classic Italian dishes using only the freshest ingredients.
